How to download a YouTube thumbnail

A YouTube thumbnail is the image that represents a video. To get it, paste the video link into this online YouTube thumbnail downloader, check the preview, and choose a size. The tool is free, and it needs no account and no app. You can use it on a phone or a computer, and it works as a YouTube thumbnail saver right in your browser.

How to use this YouTube thumbnail tool

  1. Copy the link of a YouTube video. In the YouTube app, tap Share, then Copy link. In a browser, copy the address from the address bar. Links from watch pages, youtu.be, Shorts, and embeds all work.
  2. Paste the link into the box above and press Get Thumbnail.
  3. Check the preview. Then press Download next to the size you want, or Copy image URL to copy the thumbnail address.

YouTube thumbnail sizes: HD and what is not available

YouTube publishes each thumbnail in several fixed sizes. The tool checks every size for your video and lists only the ones that exist, with their real pixel dimensions:

  • 1280×720 (maxresdefault): HD, the largest size we found.
  • 640×480 (sddefault)
  • 480×360 (hqdefault)
  • 320×180 (mqdefault)
  • 120×90 (default)

Some videos do not have the largest sizes, so the list can be shorter. The tool does not stretch small images, and it cannot make a file bigger than the one YouTube provides. That means there is no 4K or 1080p option. Use the largest size listed for your video.

Copy the YouTube thumbnail URL

Need the thumbnail address for a website or a document? Press Copy image URL next to a size to copy the image address. The address is public, so anyone who has it can open the image. Use it only for content you have the right to share.

Supported YouTube link formats

  • youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID
  • youtu.be/VIDEO_ID
  • youtube.com/shorts/VIDEO_ID
  • youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID

Links with extra text, such as a timestamp (&t=42s) or a share code (?si=…), also work.

What this YouTube thumbnail downloader is and is not

  • It is a website. It is not a browser extension, an app, or an APK file, and there is nothing to install.
  • It downloads YouTube thumbnail images, not videos.
  • It extracts the thumbnail that YouTube publishes for a video. It does not pick a frame from a video file.
  • It handles one video link at a time. It is not a YouTube playlist downloader.
  • It cannot recover deleted, private, or removed thumbnails.
  • It does not create thumbnails, so it is not an image generator.

Troubleshooting YouTube thumbnail downloads

  • “That does not look like a YouTube video link.” Check that the link comes from youtube.com or youtu.be and includes a video ID.
  • “No thumbnail was found.” The video may be private or removed, or the ID may be wrong. A deleted thumbnail cannot be recovered with this tool.
  • A size is missing from the list. That size does not exist for this video. Try the next smaller size.
  • The download fails. Check your connection and try again.

Usage rights

Downloading a thumbnail does not give you copyright or permission to reuse it. The creator or YouTube keeps those rights. Use the image for personal reference, or get the creator’s permission before publishing or editing it.

Want to save the video instead? Try the Pinterest video downloader or the X (Twitter) video downloader. Prefer Portuguese? Open Baixar Thumbnail YouTube.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a YouTube thumbnail, and what is it for?

A thumbnail is the still image that represents a video. It appears in search results, on the home page, and on the video page before you press play. Its purpose is to show what the video is about so viewers can decide whether to watch it. Creators can upload their own image, or YouTube can use a frame from the video. To see one, paste any public video link above.

Can I save a thumbnail from YouTube?

Yes. Paste the video link, choose a size from the list, and press Download. The image is saved as a JPEG file. Saving it gives you a copy for reference. It does not give you the right to reuse, edit, or post the image.

How do I download someone else’s YouTube thumbnail?

Use the same steps: paste the link of their video and download the size you need. The image still belongs to its creator or to YouTube. Use it for personal reference, or get the creator’s permission before you publish it.

Can I extract a thumbnail from a video?

This tool extracts the thumbnail that YouTube publishes for a public video. It works only with YouTube links. It cannot choose a frame from a video file on your device or from another website.

Can I find the thumbnail of a deleted YouTube video?

No. This tool cannot recover deleted, private, or removed thumbnails. If a video is no longer available, its thumbnail is usually unavailable too, and the tool shows a message that no thumbnail was found.

Can I download other YouTube images, such as channel art?

No. This tool downloads video thumbnails only. It does not download channel banners, profile pictures, or other images from YouTube.

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

The largest size we found is 1280×720 pixels, which is HD resolution. The other sizes are 640×480, 480×360, 320×180, and 120×90. Not every video has every size, so the tool lists only the sizes that exist for the video you entered, with their real dimensions. The tool does not offer 4K or 1080p thumbnails.

Which size should I download?

Choose the largest size listed for your video. That is 1280×720 when it exists. Pick a smaller size if you only need a small preview or a lighter file. The tool cannot create a size that YouTube does not provide.

How do I see the thumbnail of a YouTube video?

Paste the video link into the box above. The tool shows a preview of the thumbnail, followed by the list of available sizes. You don’t need to open the video or sign in to YouTube.

Is this YouTube thumbnail downloader free?

Yes. It is free to use, with no account, no paid plan, and no app to install. Some videos have no thumbnail to download. The troubleshooting section explains why.

What is a thumbnail downloader?

A thumbnail downloader is a tool that takes the image that represents a video and saves it as a file. This one works with YouTube links. You paste the link, and it fetches the thumbnail images that exist for that video.

How do I open a downloaded thumbnail file?

The download is a JPEG image named like youtube-thumbnail-VIDEO_ID-SIZE.jpg. Find it in your Downloads folder and open it with any photo viewer or image app on a computer or phone.

Is this an app or a browser extension?

No. It is a website that runs in your browser. It is not a Chrome or Firefox extension, it is not an app, and it is not an APK file. There is nothing to install.

Can I install or upload a thumbnail to YouTube with this tool?

No. This tool only downloads thumbnails. It does not upload or change anything on YouTube, and there is nothing to install. To change the thumbnail of a video you own, use the video settings in YouTube Studio, following the rules YouTube sets.

Can this tool create a thumbnail, or use ChatGPT or AI?

No. The tool does not create images, and it does not use ChatGPT or any other AI. It only downloads thumbnail images that already exist for a public YouTube video. To make your own thumbnail, you need a separate image editor.

Can this tool download YouTube videos?

No. This tool downloads video thumbnails only, not the videos themselves. Paste a video link to get the thumbnail images for that video.

What file format is the downloaded thumbnail?

The thumbnail is saved as a JPEG (.jpg) file, named like youtube-thumbnail-VIDEO_ID-SIZE.jpg. Each size in the list shows its pixel dimensions.

Does this tool work with YouTube playlists?

No. The tool works with one video at a time. A playlist link that does not include a video is not accepted. Paste the link of the video itself to get its thumbnail.
